During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive in a realm of memories constructed from the recollections of the villain Henry. The search for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to witness again a defining event from Henry's early years—an event that could contain the means to overcome him for good.

The Discovery in the Cavern

When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy find an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the act involved more than a fight for life.

Like many elements in volume 2, the significance of the events in the tunnel is detailed in the theatrical production The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to sell to the Soviets, who were keen to start their version of the tests. That traitor in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the container would assuredly have vials of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would later pass on to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the case could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back hours later fundamentally changed. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a malevolent force, much like how Will Byers was possessed by the Mind Flayer in the past.

Confronting Terror

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. While he orchestrates the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to gain strength.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the ultimate battle to come.
