No professional sports organization markets parity as effectively as the NFL: it defines their identity. However, after the first ten matchups during the current schedule, this isn’t a league featuring uniform distribution between the good, the bad and the mediocre. It’s one where the bulk of franchises are merely fine.

Clear Picture in NFC

In the NFC, to some degree, the picture becomes more distinct. The Rams and Seahawks (each holding 7-2 records) seem like the most balanced franchises in the NFL, and delivered decisive victories on Sunday. The Eagles with six wins despite their struggles maintain among the most gifted lineups throughout football, similar to the Packers franchise (5-2-1). The Lions also (six and three), who have been inconsistent in trench play while managing tension on their coaching staff, have demonstrated they're capable of dominating strong franchises. For all five, you can still easily construct a championship trajectory.

AFC Playoff Chaos

Over in the AFC, postseason landscape is a jumbled mess. Your four division leaders through ten weeks: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (each with 8-2 records) and the Steelers (5-4). Consider that carefully. No Chiefs presence. No Bills inclusion. Neither Ravens nor Bengals. Historically strong franchises, supported by the league’s best quarterbacks, have either glaring roster weaknesses or have suffered medical setbacks.

Parity Mechanics

From certain perspectives, this is exactly what the league wants. Yet observing this season's top AFC teams within the conference remains somewhat odd. Components of every squad suggest title potential, yet not completely. If you were asked to finalize your conference championship predictions right now, would you confidently choose any among the current division frontrunners?

Franchise Analysis

Indianapolis Colts

Beginning with the Colts, their quarterback hasn’t quite reached total collapse. However, recent performances have raised concerns. He has returned to turning over the ball and failing against blitzes. He was sacked seven times versus Atlanta on Sunday, and experienced a brief period during which he tossed a pick and coughed up the ball thrice. This is a week after he turned the ball over five times facing the Steelers.

The Colts’ offense thrived early in the season as Jones prevented the disaster plays. The running back and protection unit mean the Colts are capable of overcoming some negative plays, as they did in Berlin. Yet Jones going back to his historically mistake-heavy play would terminate championship hopes.

New England Patriots

The Patriots feel somewhat similar. Previously, they were considered jokes. Today, they stand as the league’s happiest surprise and the strongest squad in football post seven wins in a row. If not for fumbling away a manageable matchup facing Pittsburgh, they would currently hold at 9–1 as the league's best. Previously, they seemed veteran and plodding. Now they’re youthful, quick and confident. Still, it’s hard to ignore how soft the Patriots’ schedule has been. They've played against the most manageable schedule throughout football, and flaws have still emerged. The signal-caller has been brought down on 35 occasions – ranking second league-wide – and some of the shots he endured during the game proved brutal. As the season progresses, those beatings accumulate.

Denver Analysis

The Broncos are 8–2 as well, yet it seems like they're nervously waiting. Their quarterback has performed unevenly, with the attack struggling, as the defense handles the majority of the work. Lacking competent QB performance, the Broncos won't frighten anyone in the postseason. The Chargers are also hovering within their division holding a 7-2 record, yet medical problems affecting their protection unit will present challenges to achieve championship contention.

Steelers Examination

And then there’s Pittsburgh, inexplicably frontrunning their division notwithstanding receiving 25-10 by the Chargers during prime time. Their scoring margin remains negative, their defensive unit frequently falters, and Aaron Rodgers’ limitations given his veteran status continue to show up. They’re 5–4 and holding on, yet Baltimore, featuring a recovered Jackson with manageable games ahead, have won three consecutive. This development isn't entirely shocking that the Ravens have pulled to within one game of Pittsburgh, but that it has arrived so quickly represents criticism toward Pittsburgh's fluctuating form. The fact Baltimore began losing five of six and currently seem likely to claim the title speaks volumes regarding the complete conference.

Historical Favorites

The Ravens' form part among three elite teams – together with Bills and Chiefs – fueled by former MVP signal-callers, that would continue to generate the greatest concern among competitors should they reach postseason. They’re the No One Wants To See ‘Em teams, yet Kansas City and Buffalo continue to self-destruct.

Buffalo Analysis

Last week, the Bills felt confident following victory over Kansas City. This weekend they encountered one of the most disappointing losses this year. They didn't simply fail to the Dolphins; they looked terrible, losing 30-13 as visitors. It was Miami’s first win against Buffalo in more than 1,000 days.
