Child of Ex- South African President Zuma Denies Terror-Related Accusations as Legal Proceedings Starts
The daughter of previous South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror charges at the beginning of her legal proceedings in the port city of the city of Durban.
Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being prosecuted over comments she posted on online platforms several years back during fatal protests in South Africa that followed the apprehension of her father.
A period of disorder in various areas of the country in the summer of 2021, including looting and intentional burning, left at least three hundred deceased and led to damage worth an estimated $2.8 billion (£2.2 billion).
Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of encouraging this violence and faces charges of provocation to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.
Background of the Legal Matter
The unrest were focused in the provinces of Gauteng region and KZN and followed the former president's detention for disobeying a court order to appear as a witness at an investigation into allegations of impropriety while he was holding office.
The defendant has consistently denied the allegations against her, with her legal representative previously describing the state's case as insufficient.
She has also frequently claimed the charges against her were an attempt to resolve political grievances with her parent after he started his own political organization and ran against the ANC.
Backing and Legal Defense
This was echoed by the foundation, which stated the proceedings was an "power abuse" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and familial targeting" against the former president and his relatives.
A handful of supporters from her party, her party, turned up outside the judicial building, while her dad and other group representatives were present at the hearings inside.
Her legal team has argued that the evidence presented by prosecutors is inadequate and fails to provide concrete grounds for a criminal finding.
